The brown bag went into the fridge, he didn’t even bother taking the burger out of the box. Instead he just crumpled the bag so that it would fit into the small fridge and closed the door.

They stayed the night at the RV park and left before the sun was up the next morning.

They had a lot of miles to cover that day to reach the next site he had reserved.

Freckles napped in the passenger seat and Chris enjoyed the quiet solitude. Being back on the road and back to his routine did wonders for his mood, even if his mind did often wander back to the night before and his conversation with Alex.

He kept thinking about what Katy had said and would go further back and replay the times her laughter had filled the air, imagining her lips pulled into a smile and how she had smiled as he told some dumb story from his time in the military.

He found the more he thought about her the more he regretted leaving town so soon. Sure she said she didn’t want to date anyone but what about friends? Or what if he just happened to be there next Thursday and she needed a place to sit once again?

His mind went in blissful circles as he drove until finally he forced himself to stop.

“I can’t just hang around the brewery hoping she’ll be there. That’s ridiculous.” He said with a sad smile to Freckles.

“This isn’t high school or something.”

She cracked an eye in the front seat and promptly reclosed it.

“Just gotta let it go, I’ll probably never see her again and maybe last night was exactly what she needed or something.” He said with a sigh as they drove down the highway.

They’d been slowly climbing in altitude the closer they got to their destination and despite his words he still thought about Alex and regretted only getting to spend the short time he had with her.

Several gas stops and hours later Chris put the van park.

“Spot number eight, just like last time. Eh girl?” He said as he stood and stretched in the cool mountain air.

The trees were towering and a stream burbled nearby. Somewhere down the dirt road children laughed and Chris could see two kids running near a beat up old camper while their parents sat in chairs smiling and watching.

He waved when the dad looked his way and went about setting up his own camp.

The awning was extended and his chair was put out as well as a small table that acted as a desk most of the time. The sun was still pretty high overhead so he slumped into his chair and dutifully checked his email, struggling to get his computer to link to the mobile hotspot at first but then succeeding after a few tries.

Quite a bit of spam waited for him and one email from Derril.

He was more than pleased with how Chris had done the last couple days and had asked that he return next year for the same thing.

Chris emailed him back and then got to work in earnest. Trying to get a few hours in for the day.

The cool breeze was nice and the mountain air was soothing and for the first time that day Chris was distracted enough to not think of Alex for a while.

About three hours in, Chris was shaken from his work by the family he’d seen earlier.

“Hey there, sorry to bother you.” The man said, holding both of the kids’ hands.

A young boy and his older sister watched him with the kind of curiosity that would be rude coming from an adult but seemed to come naturally to kids.

“Oh hey, it’s no problem. What can I do for you?” Chris said, putting his laptop to the side and stretching his hunched back.

“We’re from spot twelve,” He said, pointing with his chin back to where he had seen them laughing and playing before.” And my kids were wondering if they could pet your dog.” He said, smiling at the older daughter.

“Won’t leave me alone about it actually.” He said with a warm laugh.

“Oh! Yeah sure. She’s real friendly.”

“Freckles. Go see.” He said encouragingly, scooting the table to the side and standing as the dog ambled over to see the kids.

“She might give you kids kisses so just watch out.” Chris said in mock seriousness.

The kids were soon porno izle laughing and giggling as Freckles licked their hands and tried to lick their faces as they pet her.

Chris extended a hand to the man. “Chris.” He said by way of introduction.

“Matt.” The man said, shaking his hand with a firm grip.

The man looked tired but happy but seeing as how both his kids appeared under five he imagined the word ‘tired’ didn’t cover the half of it..

“Thanks for letting them meet her, sometimes it’s just easier to give in than to fight it.” Matt said with a shrug.

“Oh yeah, no problem. Honestly I could use the break.” Chris said easily.

“How long have you all been here?” He asked.

“Only a couple days, we’re leaving tomorrow actually.” Matt said tiredly.

“We’ve been camping for about a week and little guy here-” He pointed to his son. “-Still doesn’t like to sleep in the camper.” He said with a laugh.

The older girl was now running while Freckles gave chase and the little boy was belly laughing at the antics.

“It’s been a good campsite, real empty which is nice honestly.” Matt supplied.

“I stayed here a while back and it was empty then too, I think not that many people know about it.” Chris said truthfully.

They both watched Freckles and the girl look under a log while hunting for sticks to throw.

“Hey, you mind if I ask your kids to watch Freckles for a while?” Chris asked in a lower voice.

“She’s real easy, listens well and I’ll be out here if you need anything. Just wanted to ask you first.”

Matt watched the little girl find a stick and throw it, only for Freckles tear after it.

Matt thought about it a bit and then nodded.

“That would actually be really helpful.” He sighed.

“Hey kids! Can I ask you for some help?” Chris said loudly. The little boy shied away from Chris and immediately went to his dad’s side while the little girl nodded vigorously.

“You see, Freckles and I have been driving all day and she’s been so bored. Do you think you could play with her a while? She’s been asking me to play for hours and I’ve still got more work to do.” Chris said seriously.

The little girl piped up. “Yeah! Dad! Can we?”

“If it’s ok with Chris, it’s ok with me.” He said.

The little boy just watched with wide eyes and remained silent.

“Yay! Come on Charlie! Let’s go play!” She cheered and the little boy, caught up in his sister’s excitement, yelled. “Yays! Play!” and ran to follow her.

“Go on Frecks, go see.” Chris said, making a shooing motions toward the kids as they ran back to their campsite.

Hesitantly she followed them. Not quite understanding what he wanted.

“Go on! I’ll come get you in a bit.” Chris said with a laugh. Either through the tone of his voice or his body language Freckles got the idea and sprinted after the laughing kids.

“If she gives you trouble just tell her to go home, she should get it. I’ll be right here for about an hour more and then come get her.” Chris said, watching the little girl hunt for another stick to throw.

“Oh, I’m sure it’ll be fine. We’ve got dogs at home.” Matt said, watching his daughter find a stick and promptly throw it, barely missing her younger brother’s head in the process. They both winced as the stick whipped past his head and Matt sighed. “That’s my cue, thanks Chris.” He said as he walked away at a fast pace.

“No problem! Be over in a bit to get her.” He said to his retreating back before sitting down and getting back to work.

An hour and half later Chris was walking down the road to the beat up camper to retrieve his dog.

He’d idly seen them throwing sticks and generally running around for most of the hour and only recently had the laughing and calling out the dog’s name stopped.

He rounded the camper and there sitting on the dirt was a very tired Freckles next to a bowl of water.

She wagged her tail when she saw him but otherwise sat there contentedly.

The kids were sitting at the concrete picnic table eating hotdogs with mac and cheese türkçe alt yazılı porno while their parents were inside the camper.

“Hey kids. Did you have fun with Freckles?” He asked loudly, stopping a good ways away.

“Yeah! She’s fun.” The girl said while the boy grew shy again and scooted closer to his sister.

“Chris! Hey, you hungry?” Matt said as he poked his head out of the camper.

“Uh, yeah sure?” He replied unsure. In truth he was hungry but he was planning on eating the untouched food from the brewery.

“Great! Let me get you a plate.” He said, pulling his head back inside and emerging a second later with a plate full of food.

Ah well, I’ll just eat the burger tomorrow. Might be kinda weird by then but oh well. He thought as he took the plate from Matt.

“Thanks.” He said as he sat at the far end by freckles.

His wife, an equally tired woman by the name of Amanda came out a little while later and sat next to a still very shy Charlie.

What followed was a strangely comforting experience of eating with a family. Charlie, the young boy, cried several times, refusing to eat his hotdog and the girl talked almost incessantly. All the while their tired parents tried to eat their own food before it grew cold.

It was oddly nostalgic for reasons Chris couldn’t quite pinpoint and he enjoyed it thoroughly.

It also helped to distract him from thinking about Alex’s smile for a good long while, although thoughts of her returned with a vengeance as he lay in bed trying to sleep.

The next morning Chris and Freckles were up early, getting ready to run the local trails before his work day began once more.

Freckles danced excitedly at his feet as he struggled to get her harness on. The weak predawn light and his groggy mind made the task more difficult than it should have been.

Finally ready they walked to the trailhead, down the dirt road and past the young family’s camper.

They quietly walked past the older trailer and made it to the trailhead without any problems and

Chris let out a big breath and stretched his hamstrings while Freckles ran this way and that, sniffing things and rooting around.

“Ready girl?” He quietly called to her and she wagged her tail expectantly. They started running and he let his mind go blank as the miles went by under his feet.

Hours later the sun was well and truly up as they trod back into the campground.

A quick stop at the water faucet refilled his bottles and gave Freckles a chance to drink her fill.

While the dog lapped up water, spilling more than she was drinking, Chris noticed the family had packed up while they were gone and left.

He smiled at the memory of eating with them and listening to Anna, their daughter, tell stories of playing with Freckles and the things they’d done. It had been a nice evening and not something he’d experienced very often.

His run, as they usually did, had cleared his mind and while his thoughts still revolved around his night with Alex he’d had a chance to really think about that night and why he couldn’t stop thinking about her.

His infatuation with her seemed oddly strong and part of him worried he was building the experience up to be bigger in his mind than it actually had been. His memories making her prettier and more beautiful than she was or her interest in him exaggerated with each remembrance,

“That’s the most I’ve seen Alex smile in a long time.” That one line, said so innocently by the waitress was what always did him in though. It confirmed that Alex had indeed had a good time and that perhaps Alex did in fact have an interest in him despite having said she wasn’t looking for a relationship.

Bah, I gotta get over this. Never going to see her again and she did say, right off the bat, that she wasn’t dating. Chris told himself in frustration. In truth he was growing tired of reliving the night, wringing every detail out of his memory. It wasn’t healthy, especially since the likelihood of ever seeing her again was so türk porno extremely low it may as well be impossible.

Realizing Freckles was done drinking he collected the empty collapsible bowl and shoved it into his running pack where it belonged.

A short walk later and they were back at site number eight and there on his front step was a folded piece of paper, held down by a rock.

It was a drawing, done by Anna and Charlie, depicting them playing with Freckles done in what looked like ballpoint pen. The figures were wobbly and one end was simply a mass of scribbles.

That was probably Charlie’s contribution. He thought with a smile.

“Looks like you made a good impression Frecks.” He said as he opened the door.

“How about breakfast?”

The day progressed as normal from there on, Chris worked and Freckles napped, the drawing went on the small fridge inside and near mid afternoon they were packing up to leave once more.

“On we go! To the next campground. Should only be a couple hours. Eh girl?” A lazy tail wag was her only response.

Unfortunately the next campground was very busy, loud groups of people partied and shouted over even louder music around campfires.

Drinks were in nearly every hand and after Chris saw the site he’d reserved online was currently occupied by a suv blasting loud music and young folks that glared at him he just kept driving.

“I’d rather just primitive camp than try and get some rest here. This is ridiculous.” He said getting grumpier by the second.

On his way out he stopped near the entrance to let Freckles do her business and stretch her legs while he pulled out a long hose to refill the water tank on his van.

I’ll have to dump the tanks soon. I think the next site has facilities for that but I’ll double check.

He thought as he stood there with the hose, listening to the cacophony of the campground all around him.

“This is horrible, I’ll have to make a note to not come here again.” Chris muttered to himself as the water tank gurgled and began to overfill.

He quickly turned off the water and rolled his hose before stowing it in his camper once more.

A quick whistle got Freckles back in the van and they rolled by an exasperated campground host on the way out.

Chris drove for another forty-five minutes before he found a suitable spot, just a little clearing off the end of a two track that was still on national forest land. By then it was around mid afternoon and he opted to just work in his van rather than set up outside. Freckles ran around frantically for ten minutes or so before growing bored and napping in the sun. Having no cell service meant he had to work on things he’d been putting off that he’d downloaded onto his computer and doing so soured his mood further.

By the time he closed his computer he was thoroughly grumpy without having a concrete reason for feeling so.

I think it’s a combination of the campground being so full of loud people, including the spot I’d reserved for myself and the fact that I think I’ve finally accepted the fact that I really won’t be seeing Alex again.

The thought had the distinct ring of truth to it but knowing what was lowering his mood didn’t make him feel any better.

“Come on girl, let’s eat that goddamn cheeseburger. That’ll cheer us up right? Two day old fries and a big ol’ burger?” He asked the suddenly excited dog.

She wagged and spun in place at the mention of food and Chris couldn’t help but smile at her enthusiasm.

He pulled out a pan to reheat the food and likewise pulled the bag from where it had sat in the fridge.

The pan went on the stove top while the bag went on the small table.

The stove clicked and then lit with a small whump and he opened the crumpled paper bag to fish out the to-go box without really looking at it.

A quick rummaging through a drawer got him a spatula to stir the fries and flip the patty and he was ready to go.

However when he went to open the styrofoam container he saw something was written on the top.

There, written in what Chris was nearly certain wasn’t Alex’s handwriting was a phone number with the name ‘Alex’ next to it and a poorly drawn heart.

Author’s note.

Thanks for reading! I hope you’re enjoying the story, I’m certainly enjoying writing it.

I know it’s a slow burn but it is what it is, if that’s not your thing sorry not sorry?
